One of the best Syrahs from Italy (not exactly a great compliment) and from one of the best wineries in Tuscany. Inky purple in color. The nose has a slight aquarium note and one wonders how long this has sat on a warm shelf (if at all). Mostly, that is a question because these often don't sell without encouragement from a shop owner or sommelier. On the palate, it seems much fresher. Nice acidity. Black cherry fruit. Light tannins. It takes some time but opens in the glass. A unique expression of Syrah, the vineyards are warm but the profile is a bit cooler. There is some depth.
Some wines are special for more than what's in the bottle. Such is this bottle. My wife and I visited the Gredos are just west of Madrid, Spain and few years ago and were blow away by the beauty, the quality of wine and the people making it in an area that I had never heard of prior to planning the trip. These are very old, high altitude vineyards on sandy soils growing Grenache which is being made by a whole new group of young winemakers. And the wines are just a unique. This is Garnacha but unlike any from other locations. Very light garnet in color, clear and bright. The nose is i
This is a lovely cooler climate Syrah made in a more elegant, lower alcohol style. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has boysenberries, white pepper and slight char. Medium bodied. On the palate, there is nice black raspberry fruit with mild tannins. Some underlying earthiness and char. Good acidity. Nice finish. This seemed to be about at peak but shoudl drink well for another five to seven years. It works better with food. This will work well with pastrami or other "deli" meats.
Another great Syrah from Campesino. This is in the vein of the Northern Rhone but with lots of good California sunshine. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is very nice with black raspberries, black olives, slight dried lavender and a hint of moist turned earth. On the palate, this is smooth and easy to drink. But, there is also nice depth with good acidity. It opens beautifully in the glass showing black raspberry fruit and underlying earthiness. Nice finish. This may still improve but it will make nice drinking for another ten to twelve years. A great match for f
