This is the second release of the Orin Swift project now that Dave Phinney's non-compete with Prisoner Wine Company is over. It was nice to get a chance to try this. This is a very solid wine. Purple in color.
I get it, many people love these wines while a smaller amount love to bash them. Personally, I enjoy them for what they are. I like to open them when I am not looking to sit in the leather char in my imaginary study and contemplate wines place in society over the centuries. This is a great wine to open with neighbors who may or may not be wine geeks, but do enjoy a big red. It is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot.
This is a "kitchen sink" blend of lots of red varietals grown in California. Garnet in color, purple at the core, bright. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, black raspberries, spices and chocolate. Full bodied. Light tannins. Moderate acidity. On the palate, this is big wine. Tasty but the kind of wine that doesn't demand introspection. Loads of black cherries and cherries with a bit of chocolate. Long finish with slight warmth. It drinks well on its own and will need big food such as BBQ Ribs off the grill. Drink over the next five to eight years.
This is a Rhone blend wine with 50% coming from California and 50% coming from France, Languedoc-Roussillon, Maury. The grapes were from the 2013 vintage though that is not on the label. This wine is only available to members of Orin Swift’s Equinox Wine Club. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, black raspberries, char, spice and black pepper. 15.4% ABV. This is not a shy wine. Great lush texture. On the palate, juicy black cherries and black raspberries with underlying charred dry earth. No noticeable alcohol on the nose or palate. Thi
This is a big California Chardonnay that checks in a 15.2% ABV. It is made in a robust, over the top style that is not for everyone. Light golden in color. The nose has lemon curd, fresh cut lumber, butter and spice. On the palate, there are earing oak tannins. Also some nice yellow grapefruit. Good acidity.
