Tasting Notes for Alden Brook Old Vine Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel 2004

Tasting Notes:

Alder Brook, Dry Creek Valley, Terlazo Family, Heraldsburg, California. Initial nose of green crushed leaf and raisin. Tastes of soft spice, full body, smooth and refined as silkiness black current, Black Berry, huge mouthfeel presence. Nice acid balance to perfect equilibrium balance to slight far edge tannins. Buy a case! White peppered mineral crystalline soft tastes relentless 45 second finish. Good to hold e drink through next 10 years, 2018. Unfiltered: look for chunks of must last fifth of he bottle yes.

Quiet nights deck relaxation.

This is more of a "claret" styled Zinfandel than a big brawny styled Zin. Purple in color with some ruby swirls. The nose has dust, black cherries and slight tobacco. On the palate, this has some depth. Juicy black cherry fruit intertwined with a bit of damp earth. Nice finish. This would be great with Indian food. Drink over the next five years, but it might surprise and last (a lot) longer.

Zinfandel—the grape Americans call their own. The story of Zinfandel mirrors the multicultural heritage of our country and the struggle of immigrants to make it in a new land. From white to red and sweet to dry, this is a grape that has been reinvented to suit the changing tastes of wine consumers across the country. Originally from Croatia, the grape showed up in the US with Italian immigrants in the 1800s (who called it, as it is still known today in Italy, Primitivo). More than a century later it was nearly extinct with vines ripped up in favor of international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. But the huge popularity of white Zin in the 1980s and 1990s saved the grape from obscurity and nowadays the finest expression of Zinfandel comes not from Croatia or Italy but from California where it is produced as a dry red wine that can be light bodied and chockfull of ripe fruit or rich and inky with high alcohol and port-like characteristics.

Cline makes some great value wines and this is one of them. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, raspberries, briar patch, and black pepper. Medium bodied. Slight tannins. Good balance. On the palate, this is a bit short of jammy but in that direction. Flavors of Cherries, Black cherries, and Raspberries. Good finish. This is more than an easy drinker, but it does go down smoothly. Nice on its own, this will work great with a lot of foods. A nice choice with ribs or a burger off the grill.

This is a blend of 77% Zinfandel, 20% Petite Sirah, and 3% Alicante Bouschet. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is deep with black cherries, slight blueberries, sandalwood, and slight black pepper. Medium bodied. Light drying tannins. Good balance. On the palate, black cherries and black raspberries with a bit of spice and pepper. Good finish. This is drinking well now and should continue for another five to eight years. It is nice on its own and will work nicely with many foods. It would work well with Roasted Chicken.

This is one of the consistently better Zinfandels from Lodi. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. Mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries and coffee along with a bit of an herbal streak. Full bodied. On the palate this has light tannins. Nice black cherry fruit. Maybe a bit of dates. A bit of late heat on the finish. This drinks well on its own and will work well with a steak or a burger off the grill. Drink over the next five to seven years.
