2022 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Langhe Nebbiolo Starda, Italy, Piedmont, Wine Review

This is 100% Nebbiolo from the Piedmont in Italy. This is a soft accessible version of Nebbiolo. Ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries along with some mustiness, ash and mint. Soft texture but firm tannins. It comes alive on the palate with cherries and a hard cherry candy note along with a slight earthiness. Good acidity. Nice finish. Very open and drinking well. This was a hot vintage but the fruit is not raisined or under ripe. It drinks well on its own but will be better with food. A great choice for a weekday pasta or pizza night. Drink over the next ten years.

This was a new wine for me. It was very good, but also very unique and interesting. The back label said it is made in the style of Nebbiolo that was consumed in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is lighter, crisp, and with a light fizz. Ruby in color, a bit frothy, but clear and bright. Too dark to be a rose, but very light for a red. On the nose, this has nice cherry fruit along with a slight sandalwood note. Very energetic on the palate with good acidity. The cherry flavors carry thru. Slightly effervescent. Tasted blind, I thought this was a Châteauneuf du Pape. It had a lot less acidity than I might have expected but such is blind tasting. The wine itself was much better than my blind tasting abilities. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, some black cherries, spice, black licorice and slight floral notes. Full bodied. On the palate, this is drinking well. Medium tannins. Plenty of black cherry fruit with some licorice on the finish. It drinks well on its own and would work nice with a pizza. Drink over the next seven to ten years.

This is always one of the best values out there in red wine. It drinks like a mini-Barolo. Ruby, clear and bright. The nose has roses, slight earthiness and cherries. With air, some sour cherries emerge. On the palate this is complex and layers of sherries, earth and tobacco are found. Great acidity. Nice finish. At eleven years from vintage, this seems at peak but has at least five or six years left. Current vintages are still available all over for under $25 per bottle. Great with food.

Deep ruby in color with brown tinges to it. On the nose, this has nice cherries with a bit of tar/anise. It has strong tannins on the palate. Cherry fruit but a pretty strong green streak. There is plenty of depth. Good acidity. This begs for food, both to calm the tannins and the green streak. It is very good though and at $18, this is fairly priced. It will be interesting to try the 2015 to compare.

From the far north in Piemonte in Italy, this is made from Nebbiolo, the same grape used in Barolo and Barbaresco. It is a very nice value play. Pale ruby in color, slightly opaque and bright. The nose is dusty with cherries and slight tar notes. Medium bodied. On the palate, cherries with underlying light earthiness. Elegant. Good acidity. Medium complexity. Medium finish. This is drinking well now and should continue for the next five to seven years. A perfect wine for mid-week pizza or pasta.
