2019 Realm Cellars The Bard, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

One of the best vintages yet for this wine and one of the more affordable reds in the Realm portfolio. It is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 5% Petite Verdot. Purple in color, opaque and shimmering bright. The nose is great with cassis, blueberries, chocolate, graphite, and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this is delicious. Cassis, blueberries, some dark cherries with spice and slight char. Long finish. This is young and would benefit from additional cellaring. It should drink well for another twenty years. Great on its own, this would be great with roasted meats or root vegetables.

Top 50 California Cabernet Sauvignons to Try Before You Quit Drinking (a non-dump bucket list if you will!)

In putting together a list of the top California Cabernets, there is sure to be some disagreement. I tried to include those wines that have a track record, the wineries still making great wines, those that seemed to have the commitment for the future and some personal favorites. I am sure I left some out. 1. Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select – It’s always hard to name the number one wine. But this has a track record that’s very long. Even in less than stellar vintages, it is an outstanding wine. They just don’t seem to make a dud. My only complaint is the price at over $200 a bottle. But, in comparison to other Napa Cabs or elsewhere in the world, this is a fair price.

Tasted blind with other wines including the 2013 Bard. It was close and although I think this is the better wine, I found the 2013 a bit better on the evening. It is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 5% Petite Verdot. Inky purple in color and shimmering bright. Opaque. The nose is big with cassis, graphite, slight earthiness and char. A bit tight. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this is young and tight. Very ripe, this needs time. Flavors of cassis, blueberries, spice and cherries. Long finish. What an amazing wine. This is one of the more "affordable" Cabernet's from Realm. It is still very expensive, but this is some of the best that Napa has to offer. It is about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. Purple in color, opaque and shining bright. The nose is great with cassis, blueberries, cedar, spice and char. Just a gorgeous texture. Lush and velvety but with enough cut to not be cumbersome. Plenty of cassis and blueberry fruit with underlying tobacco and chart. Long finish. This is still young but just delicious. With time, this will show more complexity although
