2018 Outpost Immigrant True Vineyard, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

This is a blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc from Howell Mountain in Napa. Inky purple in color, ruby rim, opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, black cherries, blueberries, tobacco, chocolate and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. Great energy. On the palate, this is very concentrated. It opens in the glass over time to show cassis, black cherries, and slight blueberries with tobacco, char and spice. Long finish. This needs a bit more time or air, but should drink well for the next twenty years. Great on its own but a bit better with big food right now. It worked quite well with a black bean chili.

This is a blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 25% Cabernet Franc made by Thomas Rivers Brown. Pop and pour, this took about twenty minutes to start opening and then drink very well. Purple in color with a ruby rim, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, baking spice, slight chocolate, a hint of iron and roasted herbs. Full bodied although certainly not over the top. Rich texture. On the palate, this has firm tannins that integrate somewhat with air. Another gorgeous wine from Thomas Rivers Brown. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot that were co-fermented . Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, black cherries, chocolate and baking spices. Lush and rich texture on a medium to full bodied frame. Very concentrated. Black cherry fruit with cassis with underlying minerality. Long finish. Drinking youthfully but very well. This should continue to mature for another five to seven years and be good for another ten to twelve more after that. It will go well with roasts of all kinds.

Realm is one of our favorite wineries and The Bard may be our favorite (so hard to choose) especially considering price. This is an expensive wine, but for the quality, this is a great wine. It is a Cabernet based blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 2% Petite Sirah . Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. Somehow, they straddle the line between old and new, corporate yet having a sense of place, and making a wine that is affordable and good value for the quality.
