2018 Field Recordings Chenin Blanc, USA, California, Central Coast

This is an old vine Chenin Blanc from vineyards in Santa Ynez and Paso Robles. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has a bunch of granny smith apples with a touch of chamomile tea. Medium bodied. On the palate this has a nice minerality. There is some green apples. Dry. Clean. This drinks easy. Nice finish. Although Chenin ages well, and these are old vines, it should probably be consumed over the next five years. It might be interesting to lay one down for ten or more though. This will go well with seafood. Oysters are a good call.

Sandlands is one of the best sources for Chenin Blanc in the United States. They make a lot of other interesting wines but these might be the best. And, their wines are all great values. These come from vines planted back in the 1970's. Golden in color. A lovely nose of honey, almond milk and Calvados. On the palate, it is much the same but less alcohol; let's say pears not Calvados. Also an underlying minerality. OK acidity. Nice finish. This will work with Salads, fish, or sushi very well. Chenin Blanc ages very well and while I have not had this old, it seems likely that this

Chenin Blanc is one of our favorite grapes and Sandlands arguably makes the best domestic Chenin Blanc wines. Light gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with apples, apple cider, slight orange peel, and minerality. Medium bodied. Good balance. On the palate, this is clean, crisp and refreshing. Flavors of apples/apple cider with some minerals. Dry. Good finish. This is very nice on its own and even better with food. It would work well with grilled trout. Drink over the next ten years.

I am a huge fan of Rhys Chardonnays and also a big fan of the Chenin Blanc grape so it was with great anticipation that this got opened. Its a very nice wine, but not at the level for me of the Chardonnays. I believe this was the first vintage so perhaps Kevin Harvey and his team will zero in on growing this varietal and making the wine they want. Tasted over three days, it didn't really change, so perhaps this is the proverbial "needs more time" wine. In any event, light golden in color with the slightest copper hue. My understanding is this is a one off bottling. The winery had issues from the Glass Mountain fire and they really needed to source grapes for some cash flow until they could get on their feet again. Hopefully, they will make it again as Chenin is such an under rated grape. Medium golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with apples, slight honey note and a bit of orange peel. Sandlands is a winery that I encourage my friends to get on their mailing list. Chenin Blanc is a huge favorite of mine and Sandlands makes a few all are great and great values. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with red apples, orange peel and minerality. Medium bodied. Good acidity. On the palate, this is deep but also drinks well.
