2018 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé, France, Provence, Wine Review

This is 55% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, and 20% Cinsault. Arguably the best Rose made today. Certainly, it is right up there with a rich track record. This vintage is another winner. A salmon pink and copper color. The nose is very pretty with watermelon along with a slight strawberry and a steely quality. On the palate, this is light and crisp. Slight tannins. Slightly oily texture. Strawberries and slight watermelon notes. Supple. This seems more rounded that some vintages. Good finish. This is very food friendly and will go with almost any food or on its own. These are supposed to age but I never have tried one with age. The freshness of their youth is too inviting.

This may be the most iconic Rosé made. It is arguably the best as well. While the price has risen over the last decade or so, there is no question that it delivers on quality. Pale salmon/copper in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with strawberries, minerals and a slight salinity. Very nice texture. Medium bodied. On the palate, strawberries with a mineral base. This is not a big wine, but its not delicate either. The finish goes on for a long time. This is 75% Mourvèdre, 14% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, and 2% Carignan. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is tight. Dusty with black cherries. On the palate, this has a wonderful glycerin texture but is tight as a drum. Not much fruit today. Some slightly bitter notes. With air some black cherries come out. Shorter finish. This keeps getting better with air so if drinking soon, give it a few hours in a decanter. Better to wait five to ten more years on it. I don't know where you live, but here on the shores of Lake Erie, its been a wet, cool spring. That might be good for the grapevines, but its put a bit of a damper on drinking outside. A blend of 50% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 26% Cinsault, and 4% Syrah. This was part of a tasting that taught me that, more than most Bandol's, Tempier's will need plenty of cellar time to peak. This was tasty now, but just felt like it was holding back. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is tight. With air, some black cherries come out. Eventually a bit of spice as well. On the palate, this has a great texture. Very deep but tightly wound. Black cherry fruit. Plenty of tannins. Long finish. If drinking now give it a few hours in a decanter. Great showing for this wine. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has some funk/brett. Also, black cherries and slight plums. Full bodied. The palate has minerals, plums, and black cherries. Layered and complex. This at the young side of peak but it is mature. Long finish. Delicious. This is great on its own and will work well with food. Roasted duck is a nice choice. drink over the next eight to twelve years.
