2016 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes, France, Rhone, Wine Review

This house and this wine don't seem to get the attention that they deserve despite the critics loving them. It is a blend of 45% Grenache, 45% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is big with black raspberries, black cherries, slight plums, spices, floral notes and roasted meats. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great energy. On the palate, this is delicious. Complex. Layers of black raspberries, plums and black cherries with some char and spice. Long finish. This is getting close to peak and should drink well for another eight to twelve years. Great on its own, this would be nice with Pasta with bolognaise sauce.

Upon first tasting, this wine wasn't giving up a thing. Really tight. But after an hour or two of air and multiple other pours being taken, this finally started to open up and show something. That said, drink this quick or be prepared to wait a while before revisiting as if not shut down, it is getting there quickly. Deep ruby in color. The nose has black cherries with rocks and dust. Every once in a while you open a bottle and its at peak. It is a great feeling. This was one of those times. Deep ruby in color. The nose is great with black cherries, minerals, slight floral notes and garrique. On the palate, this is layered and complex. At the same time it drinks fresh and with vibrancy. Plenty of black cherry fruit, some black licorice, and charred earth. Long finish. This is delicious on its own and will work great with casseroles and roasts. It should be here for three to five years and then slowly fade while still great for another ten or so.

Some people will tell you that Chateauneuf du Pape does not age. Well, this is a top wine from a top vintage and at age 19, it is doing just fine with years left. Deep ruby in color. The nose is great with black cherries, slight cherries, hints of garrique and spice, and just a bit of woodiness. Medium bodied. On the palate, this has fresh and vibrant black cherry fruit with some cherries but also some dried red fruits. Nice layering of fruit and earthiness. Good finish. This was from Magnum. Deep purple in color. The nose is great with black raspberries, black cherries, garrique and char. On the palate, this is as good as many Chateauneuf du Papes. Deep black raspberry notes with underlying charred wood. Medium tannins. Good acidity. Nice finish. This is young and has at least a decade left and probably more. The juiciness and char would make it great with burgers or steaks on the grill. At $43 for a Magnum, this is a great value.

Another great vintage in the southern Rhone valley in France. Deep garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, slight anise and floral notes (Violets?). Medium bodied. On the palate, the cherries and dark cherries come thru with underlying spices and roasted herbs. Nice texture. Good balance. Nice finish. This is drinking well now and should continue to do so for the next seven to ten years. It drinks well on its own but will work better with foods. Ribs off the grill would be a nice choice.
