2015 Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett, Germany, Mosel, Wine Review

From one of the premier German Riesling producers. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is wonderful with slight pineapple, peach and wet rocks. Medium bodied. On the palate, this is slightly sweet (demi-sec). Slightly viscous texture. Flavors of peach and grapefruit with a touch of smoke and lots of minerals. Long finish. Delicious. This drinks well now and should continue to for the next twelve to fifteen years. It will work with a wide variety of foods from aperitifs to dessert or just on its own. Grilled prawns would be a nice match.

AP #2. 9.0% abv. In a tasting of about 10 2019 Spatlese, this was my favorite (the only JJ Prum in the tasting). Silvery gold in color with slight green hues. Nice nose with lots of "wet stones", some citrus, and a bit of sulfur. Medium to full bodied. There is a nice depth here that should flash out over time. On the palate, peach, citrus with underlying minerality. Long finish. This is drinking well now with a bit of air, but should continue to improve for the next decade. Best German Rieslings (For the Money)

German Rieslings are, to put it bluntly, misunderstood wines. German winemakers will tell you that Riesling is their country's flagship wine and that the Riesling grape works perfectly with the cooler climates and slaty soils of German river valleys. If, however, you ask a group of non-German wine drinkers to tell you about Riesling, several of them will probably use phrases like "too sweet" and "doesn't pair well" in their descriptions. In my opinion, they are missing out on one of the world's great wines.

It has been a bit since I tried this producer. The wines used to be everywhere, but they don't seem as prevalent these days at least in the stores I shop in. That is a shame as these are very good and reasonably priced wines. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has slight peach, bits of lemon rind and wet rocks. Medium bodied. Slightly viscous. On the palate, this is quite tasty. Lemons, minerals and slight peach. Good acidity. Long finish. This drinks easily on its own (9% abv) but also will work well with lots of food. Thai food would be a great choice.

An Internet wine friend passed away this week. Although I never met him in person, we shared many discussions usually about German wines. He took amazingly detailed notes. This bottle was opened among people who knew him and shared with others with a toast. AP 2 602 041 008 03. Bought on release at a local wine store in Moreland Hills, Ohio (since changed ownership and moved). The cork came out easily enough. Medium golden in color.
