Garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is cherry cough syrup with some anise, in a good way. On the palate, this is tannice. Full bodied with good acidity. Cherry and black cherry fruit with underlying acidity. Nice finish. This could use a few more years of cellaring then be good for another eight to twelve after that. A nice match would be Malfatti which is a kind of Sienna Spinach Gnocchi.
Cantina di Montalcino is the only cooperative in the Brunello DOCG. It has just under 100 members who are for the most part, small vineyard owners. This is an excellent wine and don't be afraid of buying from a co-op. The vintage, 2017, was hot and dry, and the wines produced were more generous and flashy than a more typical vintage. The wine is purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, dried cherries, cigar tobacco, spice and slight char. Ruby in color with blacks swirls, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is very deep. Spices, black cherries and slight cough drop notes. On the palate, lots of black cherry fruit and firm tannins. Good balance. Nice finish. This needs a few more years to develop and come together and should drink well for another ten to fifteen after that. Lots of upside on cellaring this. It will work well with heavier meat based dishes such as Pappardelle al cinghiale (Pasta with wild Boar).
This had been open for two days when I tried a glass but was still showing well. Ruby in color with slight browning, but clear and bright. The nose had cherries and some brown sugar. It was, however, drinking much better on the palate. Medium tasnnins. Therre is a cherry cough drop quality which lends a seriousness to the wine but also tastes good, a bit or kirsch and spice. Clean. Good acidity. Nice finish. After two days open it seems like it had opened and was just starting to have too much air. Probably best to wait a few years and then drink over the following ten to twelve.
