2013 Saxum Broken Stones, USA, California, Paso Robles, Willow Creek District, Wine Review

This is a blend of 48% Syrah, 22% Petite Sirah, 17% Grenache, 6% Mourvedre, 4% Tempranillo, and 3% Roussanne. Wonderful wine that is just entering its prime drinking window. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, black cherries, spice, chocolate and char. Lovely full bodied, almost seamless texture. Medium tannins. On the palate, loads of fruit but plenty of energy to keep it from being burdensome. Layers of black raspberries, black cherries with underlying gravel and char. Delicious. Long finish. This drinks great on its own and would work well with roasted meats but also roasted veggies. Drink over the next ten to fifteen years.

This is a blend of 41% Syrah, 13% Mourvèdre, 19% Grenache, 16% Petite Sirah, 8% Tempranillo and 3% Roussanne. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is big with black raspberries, black cherries, char, white pepper, floral notes and roasted meats. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Great energy. On the palate, this has shed it baby fat but is still youthful. it took a couple of hours to really open up. Loads of black raspberry fruit with black pepper, black cherries, some blueberries and a bit of char. Long finish. This is delicious on its own but may overpower most foods. I

This is a blend of 63% Syrah, 19% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache, and 3% Petite Sirah from Paso Robles. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is powerful with black raspberries, black pepper, grilled meats, black cherries, gravel and char. Full bodied. Lush texture. great energy and balance. On the palate, this is flat out delicious. Flavors of black raspberries, black cherries, black pepper and char. Long finish. Still a big wine but it has calmed down since its youth. It should drink well for another twenty years. Great on its own, this will work well with bigger food off

Saxum is one of my favorite wineries so no surprise, but this is outstanding. It has really opened up since last tried reinforcing my belief that despite what some say, these big reds are best after ten years in a good cellar. This is made from 79% Syrah, 7% Petite Sirah and the rest Grenache, Mourvedre and Roussanne grapes. Inky purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, white pepper, roasted meats and slight violets. On the palate, the texture is wonderful. Velvety with excellent acidity. This is a blend of 56% Grenache, 13% Petite Sirah, 10% Syrah, 9% Mataro, 7% Zinfandel and 5% Tempranillo. The bottle lists 15.7% abv but it is not noticeable on the wine. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, black raspberries, gravel, and black pepper. Great backbone of acidity. On the palate, though young, this is showing a nice complexity. Medium tannins. Black cherries and black raspberries with underlying char and gravel. Long finish. Delicious.
