2013 Quintessa Napa Valley Red Wine, USA, California, Wine Review

Impressive showing for this classic Napa wine. Inky purple in color and shimmering bright. The nose is big with black raspberries, blueberries, black olives, and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, cassis, coffee, blueberries, spice and char. Deep but tightly wound. It unwinds in layers in the glass. Long finish. Just a fantastic wine that is just beginning to show some maturity. Holding for another decade will be rewarded but drinking now is great as well. Drink over the next twenty years. Great on its own, it will need bigger food. While Prime Rib would be classic, but a Mushroom Risotto with Roasted Vegetables would work nicely as well.

This is a proprietary Red wine from Napa. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with cassis, blueberries, dark chocolate, black cherries and cedar. Clean. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, cassis, cedar and chocolate. Long finish. Deep and complex. This is still drinking young, so if opening soon, give it some air. It should drink well for twenty to thirty more years. Great on its own, this is the quintessential steak house wine.

A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc. This was pop and pour and is, of course, young and really needs time or a decant. That said, it is just an incredible wine! Inky purple in color, shimmering bright and opaque. The nose has cassis, cedar, blueberries, chocolate and slight spice. Full bodied. Lovely velvety yet sinewy texture. Medium tannins. This is a Merlot dominant Napa Red proprietary blend from Oak Knoll. Really an impressive wine. Inky purple in color with a thin ruby rim, opaque and bright. The nose is tight (it is young) but with some air, black cherries, cherries, and milk chocolate emerge. With a bit more air, there is also cedar, cassis and slight sandalwood and dust. It took a few hours to full open up without any decanting. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, black cherries, cassis, plums, over a char and slight tobacco. Long finish. A more elegant side of a Napa blends but outstanding. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, slight cigar, black cherries and spice. Full bodied. On the palate, moderate tannins. Great texture. This is young-ish but delicious and showing some complexity. cassis and black cherry fruit that is concentrated and unwinds in the glass. Long finish. Give this another five years and it should be nearing in on maturity. It should last another twenty after that. Still some upside on this wine. Great on its own or with food. A steak or brisket would be a nice match.

This is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. Purple in color, opaque and shimmering bright. The nose is great with cassis, blueberries, cedar, spice and char. Lush, velvety texture but lots of vibrancy. On the palate, cassis and blueberry fruit with underlying tobacco and char. Long finish. This is still developing and will be for a decade. That said it is delicious now and will continue to drink well for another fifteen to twenty years. It drinks very well on its own and will work with bigger, fattier foods such as prime rib or a roasted veggie pizza.
