2012 Saxum Terry Hoage Vineyard, USA, California, Paso Robles, Wine Review

This is a blend of 51% Syrah, 31% Grenache, and 18% Mourvedre from Paso Robles. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is lovely with black raspberries, black pepper, roasted meats and herbs. Full bodied. Plush but silky texture. Medium tannins. On the palate, this is delicious. Some complexity but perhaps not as much as other bottlings from this vintage. More powerful though. Black raspberries, jammy with some blueberries. Long finish. This is drinking well and should continue to for another decade. Better on its own than with food, but maybe some big roasted meat dishes will work.

This is a blend of 46% Syrah, 33% Grenache, and 21% Mourvedre from Paso Robles. Inky purple, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black raspberries, roasted meats, black pepper and floral notes. Full bodied. On the palate, this has a great texture. Velvety with precision. Flavors of black raspberries with underlying roasted meats and some black pepper. Very lively. Good acidity. Long finish. A delicious wine that just about mature. It should drink well for another ten to fifteen years. A nice match with a burger or roasted veggies off the grill.

This is a blend of 50% Syrah, 34% Grenache, 16% Mourvedre checking in at 15.7% ABV. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, plums, black pepper, slight roasted herbs and meats and a bit of violets. Full bodied. Great lush texture but with lively acidity. So easy to drink with no noticeable alcohol on the nose or palate. Black raspberries over roasted earth with some herbs. Long finish. This is young but accessible. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. This is a blend of 43% Grenache, 43% Syrah and 14% Mataro. It comes in at 15.6% abv, but it is not noticeable on the wine. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. There is a bit of volatile acidity on the nose but it was not bothersome. Lots of black cherry fruit with black raspberries and white pepper. Strong acidity. On the palate, black cherries, and some black raspberries. Complex and deep. Long finish. This is drinking well now and should continue for another ten to fifteen years. This is a blend of 43% Syrah, 41% Grenache, and 16% Mourvedre. 15.1% abv. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is complex and strong with black raspberries, blueberries, black cherries, roasted meats and herbs, and char. Full bodied. Plush texture. Great acidity. On the palate, this is still young at age 12. Juicy black raspberries with blueberries and black pepper. Long finish. Delicious. This is great on its own and will require bigger foods. It would be great with a hearty beef or vegetable stew. Drink over the next ten to fifteen years.

Saxum is one of my favorite wineries so no surprise, but this is outstanding. It has really opened up since last tried reinforcing my belief that despite what some say, these big reds are best after ten years in a good cellar. This is made from 79% Syrah, 7% Petite Sirah and the rest Grenache, Mourvedre and Roussanne grapes. Inky purple in color.
