My first time trying this wine. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is very tight at first. With air some dried cherries emerge. On the palate, this is soft. It has a nice complexity to it. At peak. Layers of cherries, dried cherries and dried roses. Good acidity. Some depth. Solid finish. This should be drunk in the next three to five years. It needs food. Casseroles would be good.
Opened and decanted for about an hour or two, this is still showing "modern" and young. That said, once we started drinking it, it evolved beautifully over the next hour. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is great with cherries, licorice, slight menthol and slight dried roses. Medium to full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, lots of fresh cherry fruit with slight underlying tar and dried floral notes. Great acidity. Nice finish. This is delicious. Based on this bottle, another seven to ten years until peak. This may end up easily doing fifty years. Back
Bought on release and cellared. This was decanted for about 45 minutes prior to serving. Purple in color (darker than expected), mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries, dust and tar. Full bodied with firm tannins. On the palate, this is still drinking young. Vibrant fruit. It s deep but a bit monolithic at age 19. Black cherries with a "chalkiness". Also some anise on the finish. It is delicious and went great with pasta. Drink over the next twelve years.
This is another Nebbiolo from north-west Piedmont in northern Italy. Garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is a bit soapy along with cherries and tar. Medium bodied. Good acidity. Better on the palate, with cherries and some smoke. Moderate finish. Drink over the next five years. This will work better with foods such as a Mushroom Pizza.
Barolo's, like most wines, are available in wide price points and quality levels. Savvy shoppers can often find some of the mid-range producers at less expensive pricing and that can be a nice buying opportunity. This is one that fits into that category. It cost about $30 just a few years ago. It was young and needed some time, but for this class of Barolo, ten years is a good time to check in. And this is drinking very nicely now. This was a bit disappointing but an example proving that you often get what you pay for. This was $30 on release, from a great vintage. It seemed like a no brainer, and it's ok. Hopefully, it will still improve a bit as it is young. Light ruby in color. The nose has some cherries and baking spice. On the palate, the cherries continue. Pretty one dimensional. Medium tannins. Good acidity. It needs food and will go with just about anything. Overall, the wine is a nice wine, that will work at the dinner table and was not expensive. But, there is nothing I taste to suggest Barolo.
