2009 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, USA, California, Sonoma, Wine Review

This is a big Pinot for those who love this style. 14.6% abv according to the label. Purple/garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has black cherries, cherries, slight root beer and spice. Full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, load of fruit but balanced by juicy acidity. Plenty of depth. Black cherries, cherries and spice. Long finish. Delicious. This drinks great on its own and will work with bolder flavors in foods such as Roasted Fowl. Drink over the next ten to twelve years.

Ruby/purple in color. The nose has cherries, slightly sour and sandalwood. On the palate, sour cherries with slight root beer note. This is a big wine and ageing pretty slowly. There is still a ton of fruit and the alcohol is in check, so I suspect this will continue to develop. It will be interesting to see how much complexity it gains. Like many wines that lean far to one style, if you didn't like this young, you probably won't like it old (and visa-versa). There is some slight heat on the finish but that settled down with some air.

California has actually been making outstanding wines from the Pinot Noir grape for a long time. Sure, not long in the Burgundian sense but going back at least to the middle of the last century there were good bottles of Pinot Noir being produced in California. Starting slowly, in the 1990’s, and then exploding when the movie Sideways came out, there are now more and more offerings of good to excellent Pinot Noir being produced in California.

Kosta Browne wines are some of the most sought after Pinots in California. They are also wines that people tend to love or hate because they are to the ripe and jammy side of Pinot Noir. Its always fun to drink one and listen to the comments. This is deep ruby in color. The nose has bright black cherries with some baking spice. With air, some root beer and Faygo Red Pop notes. On the palate, there is a lot of cherry, black cherry notes along with a bit of cola. It is big and fruity and also delicious. California's Sonoma County has a near-perfect climate for growing cool-weather grapes. Fog banks that creep over the hillsides from the Pacific Ocean and relatively cloudy weather during key months (Californians call it "June Gloom") make many parts of Sonoma an ideal place to plant pinot noir and chardonnay.
