2008 Nikolaihof Riesling Smaragd Vom Stein, Austria, Wachau, Wine Review

Light to medium golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with honey, slight pineapple, wet rocks and with air, just the slightest hint of diesel. Full bodied. On the palate, this still will develop more although it is very nice now. Almost blowsy but just enough acidity to rein that in. Not sweet but has the texture of a sweet wine and is dry. Plenty of honey and slight peach over a crushed rock base. Nice finish. Very nice on its own, but would be better with Thai food. Drink over the next ten to fifteen years.

Consumed over two nights. Consistent. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has diesel fuel, lemons and salinity. On the palate, this is dry. Slightly viscous texture. Grapefruit with underlying minerality. Slightly bitter grapefruit pith on the finish. This is youthful but approaching maturity. It probably should be consumed in the next seven to ten years. This will work with almost any food, but sea food or poultry would be best. It will work better with food than on its own.

Vom Stein is a sub-site of the Silberbichel vineyard and is a slight incline, sloping east. Nikolaihof makes beautiful wines from this vineyard. Smaragd is the highest level of quality in Austrian wines. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with minerals, flint, lemon, slight peach and spice. Full bodied. On the palate, a nice whiff of grapefruits and lemon with underlying minerality. Wispy tannins. Lots of depth and complexity. Good acidity. Long finish. This is close to mature but will still develop for another three to five years and drink well for another

This is a trocken (dry) Riesling from Lower Austria. Purchased off the list at Palmen Haus Brasserie in Vienna. Golden in color with green hues, clear and bright. The nose is outstanding. Peaches, slight lemon citrus, a hint of honey and wet rocks. Medium bodied. Crisp. On the palate, it feels like it will be sweet, but it is dry. Peach, apricots with underlying minerality and wet stones. Long finish. Very refreshing on a hot day but quite food friendly. It went very well with a vegan Jackfruit Chili Con Carne Taco if not the traditional food pairing. Drink over the next twenty

This bottle was purchased last summer at the winery. Great showing for this wine. Dry. 12.5% abv. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is interesting with peaches, crushed stones and slight herbal notes. With air, just a hint of petrol emerges. Medium to full bodied. Slightly viscous. Complex and deep on the palate. Peaches and crushed rocks. Long finish. Not a typical showing but delicious. The wine wis Demeter certified Biodynamic. Drinking well, this will easily go another fifteen to twenty years. This was cool to try at the winery. The bottle had been open, but refrigerated for three days. Still a vibrant green/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose has diesel as one might expect from a 16 year old Riesling, but also nice minerality and a hint of peach. Full bodied. A broad complexity on the palate. Minerals and slight citrus. Nice finish. Although showing some age, for those who appreciate an aged Riesling, this is drinking well. This would work well with a nice Mulligatawny soup.
