2001 Carver-Sutro Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

Due to a heavy amount of Brettanomyces, this is a love it or hate it wine. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has a ton of barnyard along with boysenberries and char. Full bodied. Mature. On the palate, a few people that tasted this called it "chunky". Not sure what that means but it is very earthy with some black raspberry fruit. Good balance. Having had three bottles now, the cleaner the bottle the better the wine, but I enjoyed them all. Complex. Deep. Drink over the next five to ten years maybe longer for well stored bottles. It does work well with heavier dishes such as braised short ribs.

Obviously way too young, but, this was open and delicious. For about an hour or so, and then shut down tight. We recorked and sampled over the next couple nights. Day 2. Still shut down. Day 3. Drinking well and the bottle was drained. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has boysenberries, gravel, char and spice. Thick tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, loads of boysenberry fruit with underlying char. Deep but like looking into a bottomless hole. Long finish. Not sorry to have tried it, but the remaining bottles will need a rest. Pallisades is one of the great Petite Sirah vineyards and Carlisle really nailed it with the 2016 vintage. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with boysenberries, gravel, blueberries and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this is delicious. Boysenberries, black cherries, blueberries with underlying gravel. Clean. Long finish. This is drinking well now but still young and may improve. Drink over the next fifteen years. Nice on its own, this would work well with grilled meats.

Surprisingly open and drinking well with just a bit of air. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black raspberries, some blueberries, slight char and a bit of black pepper. Full bodied. Juicy texture. On the palate, this is deep with some complexity. Certainly, it will gain complexity with more ageing. This is one wine that I almost never open this young. But, you know what? It was great! Sure, it might improve. Probably will, but this is delicious right now. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with boysenberries, slight black raspberries, slight floral notes, and a bit of asphalt. Full bodied with firm tannins. Palisades is one of the better Petite Sirah vineyards (albeit there are not that many). This was my first time trying a wine from Mending Wall. Their facility is where Thomas Rivers Brown makes much of his wine these days. Inky purple in color. The nose has boysenberries, clay, gravel and slight char.
