Once upon a time there was a 20th century photographer named Ansel Adams, who took breathtaking, dramatic nature photos, particularly of the American West. Today, in addition to adorning classrooms, dorm rooms, and cubicle wall-ettes around the country, this photographer’s images grace the between-the-barrels spaces at a specific California winery – Turnbull Wine Cellars.
In addition to the largest private collection of Adams’ photographs (which are displayed on a rotating basis in the tasting room), Turnbull offers visitors the chance to try luscious, reasonably priced, cabs and syrahs in a quiet cellar setting. The attendant wine-pourer is knowledgeable about both the wines and the history of the winery, and happy to answer as many questions as a visitor cares to throw, provided he’s not too busy. Tours are also available by appointment.
