Wildcat Mountain: Carneros' and Sonoma's Coolest Vineyard

When veteran winemaker Steve MacRostie went looking for a new vineyard to plant his chardonnay, pinot noir and syrah he discovered Wildcat Mountain in the Carneros/Sonoma region.  "I felt Wildcat would push the envelope, something untried.  The cooler climates, the stressful site, the thinner soils; this is not a safe place to set up a farming operation.  In a business sense it was probably rather stupid," he said plainly.

Vins de France 101: Alsace, France’s Little Wine Treasure

Take a deep breath. While exhaling, say “Ahhhl zas.” It resonates like a yoga mantra with the emphasis on “Ahhh.” The phonetic version of Alsace reveals the beauty of this little border province and the prominence of one of France’s smallest wine regions. It harbors a medieval landscape from a bygone era. Half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and Romanesque churches have you anticipating someone heavily cloaked in costume to walk by you munching on a giant turkey leg.

V. Sattui Winery

The Vibe:

Known as one of the limited number of Napa wineries that have county permits for picnics, V Sattui offers mid-day tasters a chance to buy some bread and cheese and sit for a spell in the shade. While patrons cannot bring their own fixins onto the grounds, the on-site deli offers sufficient varieties of meat, cheese, bread, dips and oils to satisfy the most discerning of palates. The wines are not particularly noteworthy, but the three rooms of foodstuffs and other items are something of a shoppers’ paradise.

Rutherford Grove Winery

The Vibe:

A medium sized, family owned and operated winery that sits on the site of a former eucalyptus grove, Rutherford Grove Winery and Vineyards offers visitors flights of its estate grown cabernet and merlot, as well as sangiovese and sauvignon blanc. The Pestoni family, who still own and run the business, are descended from some of Napa’s pioneer winemakers, and over the past several decades have pioneered their own innovative methods for disposing of grape waste (skins, seeds and stems, also known as pomace) and reusing the remnants of grape seeds (see the Napa Valley Grapeseed Oil Company, with which third generation Pestonis are currently involved). Visitors will enjoy grabbing a glass at the tasting counter and browsing the grounds, or sitting under a shady umbrella in the ample picnic area.

Sagrantino di Montefalco: From Umbria Comes The Best Red Wine You Never Tasted!

The region of Umbria sits landlocked in the center of Italy. With Tuscany to the Northwest, the Marches to the East and Latium with Rome to the South West, it is a beautiful region that sometimes gets lost in the conversations about Italy. Umbria has one wine that gets some international recognition; their famous white wine Orvieto. In fact, many agri-tourismo wineries surround the quaint medieval town of Orvieto which has become something of a destination for a few relaxing days while touring Italy. But, there is also a red, Sagrantino di Montefalco, which also hails from Umbria that is worth putting on your radar.

Sauvignon Blanc - the Summer Savior

Now that it’s actually getting warm here in Seattle, it’s time for those delicious Summertime meals – lots of fresh vegetables, salads, and seafood. Normally, I watch my food budget very carefully, but when the farmer’s markets are rocking the produce, I fill up my bag with abandon and gather friends around to enjoy the light fresh flavors of the fields, rivers and ocean.

While some people drink red wine year around, I match my wines to the season and, of course, the food.

Northern Rhone Red: The Original Syrah

It’s summer, which means that for three months we say goodbye to rich, heavy red wines and welcome into our repertoire zippy whites and crisp roses to sip on the porch while soaking in the sun. That’s what most of the country does, at least. But not here. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, whose summer comes in the fall and spring, whose spring comes in the winter, and whose winter comes in the summer (and whose fall never comes).

Soave - A Veneto White Wine That Is Summer's Perfect Companion

Last month, I wrote about the white wines of Friuli because as summer approaches, many of us are on the lookout for tasty and interesting white wines. This month, I would like to continue talk about white wines from Italy, this time from their neighbors in the Veneto.
