BBQ Wines

The BBQ season is about over in those climes where it gets replaced
by fireplace season, so we have all had plenty of chances to match BBQ to wine.

Can it be done?

In my never humble opinion, the answer is no. Just can't be done. You got your Hickory smoke, your brown sugar or molasses, your vinegar, hot peppers, your sweets and beans and collard greens and so on. What wine will show well?

Again, none. I think all you can do is find the wine that tastes the least bad with the 'Q.

It's not as pronounced of a problem, but I think the same thing when people want to find a wine to go with a grilled hamburger sandwich. Raw onions, pickles, relish, ketchup, mayo, mustard, a little slaw or potato salad on the side - isn't there anything else you like to drink, because that paper plate platter is not made to be accompanied by wine.

That's how I feel about it. How about you?

Of course it depends on what you cook. We did an article on BBQ wines a while back: http://www.intowine.com/barbecue-wine-wine-recommendations-summer-holida... . Some good ideas there.

"Of course it depends on what you cook"

What do you cook at BBQ?

"Hickory smoke, your brown sugar or molasses, your vinegar, hot peppers, your sweets and beans and collard greens "

This kind of stuff sounds right, along with slaw, potato salad, mac & cheese, not to mention ribs, chicken and pulled mpork, and beef.

I looked at that link - nothing there but bald assertions by people selling wine that any one of several different styles of wines goes with "barbecue" or "spicy grilled foods".

Nobody says what they are cooking which supposedly "it all depends on".

All I can say, anybody that recommends Primitivo to go with anything is trying to sell a bottle of primitivo.

Ok , I am married to a BBQ nut, useless to say, we eat a  lot of bbq from different smokers... It all depends on your rubs/marrinades. Once you have a recipe you can try to match a wine with it. Fruit to fruit, spice to spice, ect...

Primitivo is great, but certainly not the only choice. Try to tell an Argentinian that, he would insist on Malbec, or Carmenere,  they bbq all the time. ...

I am hungry now...
